Walking the Goose

90 days of random thoughts and deeds while walking the dog in suburban SGV

  • PART 1: September 5th, 2.8 miles – Morning walk with my dog, the Goose. We meet what-could-be me and Goose’s future selves: an old man and his 10-year old black labrador…
  • PART 2: September 8th, 2 miles – It was raining, which is unusual, especially these last five years. It feels like a thousand days since the last time it rained in LA…
  • PART 3: September 9th — …I notice today that Goose is not as spooked when other dogs bark at her. I’ve been saying (singing), “We ain’t afraid of no ghosts,” every time she gets scared. Maybe that helps. But probably she’s just getting used to them…
  • PART 4: September 10, 2.5 miles – Noticed this on our dog walk this morning. Hmmm. The Devil’s Water Meter…
  • PART 5: September 12, 2 miles — Morning walk with goose and the kid. I ask the kid, “Do I remind you of the dad in Diary of a Wimpy Kid?”…
  • PART 6
  • PART 7
  • PART 8 : September 17th 2.0 miles – Most of the time people assume that Goose is a boy. She is, of course, a girl…
  • PART 9
  • PART 10
  • PART 11: September 20th, 2.25 miles – There’s something about being responsible for a living thing. Like a dog, or a baby, or a ficus tree. It puts a cap on how much procrastination you can get away with…
  • PART 12: September 21st 1.66 miles – …I say, “It’s because humans have too much imagination. So, even when we see that something is safe, we can keep imagining that it’s not.”…
  • PART 13
  • PART 14: September 23rd, 2.0 miles – We’ve been living in this neighborhood for like 15 years. So we know some people. This morning I saw my sister-in-law zip by in her moon buggy, the Toyo Twins zip by in their suped-up coupe and the mayor’s wife walking her German Sheppard…
  • PART 15: September 24th, 2.5 miles – There’s an old dude that lives on the corner. He’s got a cinderblock wall on the west side of his property.  There’s a car-sized hole in that wall right now…
  • FullSizeRender_2PART 17: September 25th, 1.85 miles – I make comments all the time about the Goose and her anxieties. As if she’s the one with the problems and I’m the one that’s got his shit together. But of course that’s not entirely true…
  • PART 18: September 26th — Offered the kids 25 cents for every time they walk the dog with me. The older one took me up on it. He doesn’t need the money. He just likes to help…
  • PART 19: September 27th, 1.0 miles — Nothing to report…
  • PART 20: September 29th, 2 miles – There’s this old Pixies song that’s stuck in my head…
  • PART 21: September 30th, 2.3 miles – I meet twice a month with other writers. We read each others’ work and critique it. It works because we’re good at knowing what we don’t like about each other’s projects and figuring out ways to tell each other what we don’t like about each other’s projects without (usually) ending up in fist fights or inconsolable crying…
  • PART 22: October 1st, 2.2 miles – We walked by the Husky and the angry Chihuahua today. We were on the other side of the street. And instead of barking with his usual gnarly bark, the husky started howling. He howled and he howled from when we first got in eye-sight until we turned the corner…
  • PART 23: October 2nd, 2.6 miles – It’s National Black Dog day. Yes, there is such a day. I thought it was weird too. But it turns out it’s a do-gooder holiday to bring awareness to discrimination against black shelter animals…
  • PART 24: October 3rd, 2.89 Miles – This old dude was standing in front of the Lutheran church. He looked like he had a hard night and maybe was still pretty drunk. He was looking up at the big picto-sculpture of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, holding his crook in one hand and loving kindness, presumably, in the other…
  • PART 25: October 5th, 10 miles – No dog today. Left the Goose at home so I could do a long run, which is rare these days: running long and going out without Goose…
  • PART 26: October 6th, 2.8 miles — …But I figure, what the hell, the zombie apocalypse is still at least a year away. Might as well let her enjoy her innocence for while…
  • PART 27
  • PART 28: October 7th, 2.5 miles — Goose is obsessed with trying to catch squirrels. Every day she tries. And every day I stop her. But I wonder, “who am I to stand in between a girl and her dreams?”…
  • PART 31: October 10th 1.5 miles – …Not all pit bulls are fighting machines…
  • PART 32: October 11th 2.65 miles – …It’s like living in a giant ass library, except without the books…
  • PART 33: October 12th 13.1 miles — Long Beach Half-Marathon
  • PART 34: October 13th 2.93 miles – …I just read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. That is some bleak-ass-shit. I feel awful. I remember when I saw the movie, I felt awful for like three weeks afterwards. I thought, since I already saw the movie, I wouldn’t feel so bad after reading the book. Well, I feel like crap. Maybe not as crappy as I would have if I hadn’t seen the movie, but still, like crap…
